The Seward Bursary – the Gift of Education

One of the most important functions of a broad and stimulating education is to enable social mobility. We believe that every child and young person has potential, but that some do not have the opportunities, the guidance or the life chances to develop and maximise that potential. An outstanding education should be a right rather than a privilege and our Seward Bursary broadens access to life-changing opportunities at LCS to young people who will benefit from them the most. We understand just how effective our outstanding academic and enrichment curriculum, exceptional pastoral care and well-informed guidance and support can be in transforming futures.

A Seward Bursary supports young people from particularly challenging circumstances by providing a fully funded award for those facing social or economic disadvantage and other vulnerabilities. By covering all tuition fees plus additional costs such as uniform, school trips and co-curricular activities, this bursary helps children to redefine their future.

This bursary is named in honour of Canon Thomas Seward (1708-1790) the clergyman, author and editor who was part of the Lichfield intellectual circle that included Samuel Johnson, Erasmus Darwin and his own daughter, the poet and author Anna Seward, amongst others. Canon Seward lived in the Bishop’s Palace from 1754 until 1790 and his progressive ideas on female education facilitated his daughter’s career.

It is incredible to see children grow in confidence and not only raise their aspirations, but start to believe they are capable of achieving anything and, ultimately, influence their peers and become role models for others. The Seward Bursary provides the gift of education for children from disadvantaged or vulnerable backgrounds, and that is the greatest gift you could ever give.
